Feb.  10/16  Garden Diseases- What Can I do?  Non-infectious diseases are caused by environmental factors, such as nutrient deficiencies and lack of water. Infectious diseases are usually caused by fungi, bacteria and viruses and can be spread in a number of ways. While it’s difficult to isolate your garden from attack, Neil Ritchie of Ritchie’s Feed and Seed will help us identify some of the more common plant diseases and provide friendly solutions for controlling them.

Mar. 9/16  The Peonies of AP Saunders:   A.P. Saunders was the son of the first director of the Central Experimental Farm and he created some marvelous peonies, a good number of which are in the display beds at the Farm. He was a professor at Hamilton College in upper New York state, about a 2 hour drive from Ottawa. What makes AP Saunders’ peony breeding so valuable, even today is that he brought together a wide variety of species peonies, crossing them to achieve about 17,000 seedlings, from which he selected the best for hybridization. As a result of AP Saunders’ work, gardeners gained access to a whole range of new colours on plants that flowered earlier than traditional varieties.

Apr.  13/16  The Art of Pruning- Proper pruning enhances the beauty of almost any landscape tree and shrub. Like any other skill, it requires knowing what you are doing to achieve success. We prune to: train plants, maintain plant health, improve the quality of flowers, fruit, foliage or stems, and to restrict growth.  Knowledgeable staff from Peter Knippel Nursery will talk about the principles of proper pruning.

May 11/16  Shrubs For the Home Garden: Shrubs can form the backbone of many gardens  providing structure as well as decorative appeal. They vary enormously in shape, habit, texture, flower type and foliage with many being highly fragrant too. Shrubs offer different season appeal; bearing spring, summer or fall flowers, berries, striking autumn foliage and, in some cases adding interesting structure in  the winter garden. Suzanne Patry, owner of Whitehouse Perennials will speak on the many benefits of shrubs including their hardiness and how you can incorporate them as a main element in a garden design to give you years of pleasure.
