Founded in 1977, the Club is committed to promoting interest and education in all areas of horticulture. Join us and meet fellow gardeners who share an interest in or a passion for gardening. Learn new skills and share your experience with others. Membership is open to all persons interested in gardening, regardless of skill level or experience.
Although meetings are back to being in-person events, specific meetings may still be held virtually via Zoom. In-person meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month at 7:30 pm at Larkin House, located at 76 Larkin Drive (adjacent to the tennis courts). Occasionally special meetings or events may occur on other days or at other times or at other locations. Please consult the Agenda below for the current year’s event schedule as well as to double-check as to whether a specific meeting event will be held in-person or virtually via Zoom.

Sept. 11/24 Late Bloomers for a Fall Fling – As the days grow shorter and the nights become cooler it is hard to say goodbye to our summer garden. Luckily with some planning we can enjoy a second wave of beauty with fall blooms and ornamental plants. Cindy Cluett of Beyond the House will share many plants that will help us embrace the changing season.
Oct. 09/24 Best Shrubs for Multi Season Interest- Shrubs play many roles in the garden, be it to create structure, colour, texture and interest. Many are stunning for two or three weeks then fade into the background. Shrubs just don’t produce spectacular flowers for a limited time, many offer other features such as fruit production to attract wildlife, brilliant fall colours, attractive bark or unusual trunk or branching formations. If well chosen, they can make a large and exciting statement in your landscape. Join us as Mary Reid from Green Thumb Garden Centre talks about the best shrubs to achieve a Multi-season exciting garden.
Nov. 20/24 Holiday Florals- Join us for our annual evening event with Jessica Barrett and Sophiane Laib of Mill Street Florist. Watch this amazing duo create fabulous holiday centrepieces. Learn tips to create your own at home pieces. You may be a lucky recipient of one of their amazing arrangements. Net proceeds are donated to the Barrhaven Food Cupboard. PLEASE NOTE THIS EVENT WILL BEGIN AT 7:00 PM AT THE BARRHAVEN UNITED CHURCH, 3013 JOCKVALE RD.

Jan. 08/25 Mix and Match: Beautiful Combinations of Native Plants (Virtual Meeting via Zoom Presentation)– As individual specimens, native plants provide much beauty and many ecological benefits, but in luscious combinations, they can take your garden to new levels. In this illustrated talk, Lorraine Johnson shows how you can mix and match tried-and-true performers that flourish together, focusing on flowers, foliage, shape, colour, texture and garden design. Lorraine is an activist and advocate of the environment and an author including her latest book: A Garden for the Rusty=Patched Bumblebee: Creating Habitat for Native Pollinators: Ontario and Great Lakes Edition.
Feb. 12/25 When is a Weed More Than Just a Weed? (Virtual Meeting via Zoom Presentation)– Many of the common plants that we sometimes call weeds are actually useful, rich in nutrients, and can be used to make herbal remedies and are even growing in our own backyards and local forests. Dr. Shawn Yakimovitch, Kemptville Naturopathic Clinic, and Claude Smith, Kemptville Greenhouse Campus, will discuss plant identification, how to forage, medicinal properties and preparation for use.

Mar. 12/25 Growing From Seed- Join us as Rachel Gill from the ever popular “How Does Your Garden Grow?” Facebook page, talks about everything you need to know about starting seeds at home. She will cover such topics as supplies needed, recommendations on what to look for when purchasing seeds, tips for germination, water/temperature/lighting requirements, common mistakes and challenges and hardening off before transplanting.
Apr. 09/25 Hydrangeas: Selection and Care- Hydrangeas are one of the most popular flowering shrubs with new cultivars continually entering the market. So how do you choose? Joan Johnston of Peter Knippel Nursery and Garden Centre will focus on varieties that will thrive in your garden adding colour, elegance and beauty. These include paniculata, arborescens, petiolaris and macrophylla cultivars. Planting, pruning tips and growing requirements will be highlighted.
May 14/25 How to Grow and Care for Magnolias, Rhododendron and Azaleas in the Ottawa Area– Magnolias, Rhododendron and Azaleas are the epitome of spring. Their showy displays of color excite the senses and have a way of taking centre stage in the landscape. Robert Glendinning from the Central Experimental Farm will talk about planting, general care, preferred species/cultivars, winter concerns, pruning and will briefly touch on propagation..

Barrhaven Garden Club in the Media
The Barrhaven Garden Club would like to thank the publisher of the Neighbours of West Barrhaven and Cedarhill magazine for their story on our Garden Club in March 2024.
Rob Stuart is a member of the Barrhaven Garden Club, a volunteer at the Rock Garden at the Central Experimental Farm (CEF) and the Co-President of the Ottawa Valley Rock Garden & Horticultural Society. He and Mark LeBlond, another CEF volunteer, installed the Demonstration Crevice Garden at the CEF with the intent of making visitors to the gardens aware of this Rock Gardening technique for smaller spaces.
